How to clarify your goals!

How to clarify your goals!

Posted on 03. Oct, 2014 by Julia Mitchell.

Are you happy with the way you life is right now?  Are you doing what you want to be doing or do you think there is something else?  Do you wonder if you are putting in a lot of effort but it could be the wrong path?

Confusion and double minded will keep you stuck and stop you from moving forward.  Regardless if what you are doing now is the thing you end up doing forever or not you need to stay focused and have clarity.

How do you get started in this process?

Below is a short exercise that should take around 10 to 15 minutes.

Find a quiet spot, turn the phone and facebook off, you don’t want interruptions..  If you can do this with a partner great if not by yourself and a notebook is fantastic.

Close your eyes, block out surrounding noise and begin to take some deep breaths.  Sit up and put your bottom into the back of the chair as you breath in and then out.

Now I want to focus on the following questions.

Imagine over the next 3 years you achieve massive success.  What will your life be like at the end of those 3 years, October 2017.

Picture a calendar and you are on the month October 2017, it could be on your iphone or a paper calendar.

With this in mind begin to answer the following questions.  There is no right or wrong answers.  Answer with whatever pops into your mind first and don’t think too much about it.  Add your own questions or thoughts as you go.

It is October 2017 and you had experienced a massively successful 3 years.

Where are you now?

Where are you living? Take some time to get a sense of your surroundings – is it busy or quiet? City or nature? What are you surrounded by? What sort of things are happening around you? What does your home look like?  Do you own it outright or are you renting or have a mortgage?

How are you feeling?  Think of 2 to 3 words which describe how you are feeling your current state of mind.

Who are you doing business with?  Friends, Family, new people, what do they look like, what do they feel about you?  How do you feel about them?

What does a typical day look like? What time do you get up, what is your schedule, what do you spend most of your time on?  Where do you work from?  How many hours are you spending on work?  How many hours on play?

What do you enjoy doing the most?  How much time do you spend doing this?  How does this make your feel?

What was your biggest achievement over the last 3 years?  How does that make your feel?

What do you see improving on?  What do you want to do next?

How many people have you helped?  How much money have you given away?  How did that make you feel?

When you’ve finished answering the questions, return your calendar to present day. Slowly open your eyes and reflect on your answers, and especially your feelings about them. You may want to write down your main observations.

This exercise is designed to tap into your feelings rather than just your thoughts.  By relaxing and visualing you are better able to tap into you fundamental, sub-conscious desires.

Cut through the clutter, the “what ifs”, the “yes buts”, and the other myriad thoughts that get in the way when you try to “plan you life” more logically.

Over the next couple of days, you’ll find that your long term goals become much clearer. This exercise plants a seed. It provides a focus for your sub-conscious mind, which will continue to work until your goals are clear.

Once you know the goals you truly desire, you can much more easily identify strategies and put together a plan to get you there.
