Servant Leadership

Servant Leadership

Posted on 27. Jun, 2010 by Julia Mitchell.

The Parable of Brother Leo

A legend tells of a French monastery known throughout Europe for the extraordinary leadership of a man known only as Brother Leo. Several monks began a pilgrimage to visit Brother Leo to learn from him. Almost immediately, they began to bicker about who should do various chores.

On the third day they met another monk going to the monastery, and he joined them. This monk never complained or shirked a duty, and whenever the others would fight over a chore, he would gracefully volunteer and do it himself. By the last day, the others were following his example, and from then on they worked together smoothly.

When they reached the monastery and asked to see Brother Leo, the man who greeted them laughed.

‘But our brother is among you!’ And he pointed to the fellow who had joined them.

Today, many people seek leadership positions, not so much for what they can do for others but for what the position can do for them: status, connections, perks, advantages. They do service as an investment, a way to build an impressive resume.

One of the Merriam-Websterdefinitions of the word “serve” is as follows:

Serve (‘sərv) verb: a) to be of use b) to be favorable, opportune, or convenient c) to be worthy of reliance or trust d) to hold an office: discharge a duty or function

As we frame leadership with servanthood, what does this mean? It means that we, as servant leaders, must lead from a servant heart.

The phrase “Servant Leadership” was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in 1970. In that essay, he said:

The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.

The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?

I truly believe that Servant Leadership has never been more applicable to the world of leadership than it is today. Not only are people looking for a deeper purpose and meaning when they must meet the challenges of today’s changing world; they are also looking for principles and philosophies that actually work. Servant Leadership works. Servant Leadership is about getting people to a higher level by leading people at a higher level.” Ken Blanchard

The parable about Brother Leo teaches another model of leadership, where leaders are preoccupied with serving rather than being followed, with giving rather than getting, with doing rather than demanding.

Leadership based on example, not command. This is called servant leadership.

Can you imagine how much better things would be if more politicians, educators, and business executives saw themselves as servant leaders?

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader

Gid Rid of the Mess

Gid Rid of the Mess

Get Rid of the Mess, Get Rid of the Stress

It pays to get organized!!!

Take a look around. What do you see? Whether you’re at home or at your desk, chances are you’ve got stuff. Stuff to be sorted through, thrown out, stored, and above all, organized. What you don’t have? Time and motivation.

Organization is about being able to find things,‖ says Donna Smallin, author of Cleaning Plain & Simple. ―The goal isn’t so you have a nice, neat space. It’s to find things because when you can’t, it’s frustrating and it’s stressful.‖ (Just ask anyone who has wasted an hour hunting for car keys.)

For a clean sweep, you don’t need to spend every weekend between now and New Year’s shuffling through stuff in your basement or your office. Instead, break your tasks into manageable chunks of time–just 10 to 30 minutes a day–and get it done bit-by-bit. Here are easy tips to help you get organized and stay that way at work and at home.

At Home

Your home is a haven from the rest of the world,‖ Smallin says. ―When you have a more orderly environment, there’s more of a sense of peace so you really are creating a welcoming space to come home to and feel good about.‖ Here’s how to make your living space the place you want it to be.

Instant makeover

Over the years you’ve accumulated enough tools, gadgets, and doo-dads to run your own cooking show out of your kitchen. Problem is, you’re more of a bread-buyer than breadmaker type of gal. Problem solved: ―Clear off your kitchen counter completely,‖ Smallin says. Then, put back only the things you use on a regular basis and store the rest away in cabinets.

Clean out the closet

It can be tempting to leave every piece of clothing you own in your closet. But are you really going to wear those bermudas in October? Instead, create what Smallin calls an ―everyday closet.‖ The only clothes you should be looking at are those you could potentially wear this season. Clear out anything that doesn’t fit, needs repair, or that you didn’t wear last fall. Next: Every day for a week, spend 10 to 15 minutes going through one drawer or one shelf at a time. You can even do this during commercials.

Donate year-round

One problem with cleaning is what to do with the stuff you don’t want. Keep a donation box somewhere in your home where you can put clothes, toys, old cell phones, kitchen gear, and eyeglasses to give away. Donate the stuff to a charity of your choice. Many, like the Salvation Army and Big Brothers Big Sisters, pick up the stuff from your house at no cost. Your unnecessary belongings are going to a good cause.

At Work

According to a recent study, 75% of workers become more stressed when disorganized. Because of the mess, the study found, workers miss crucial deadlines and wind up working late 2 or more nights per week. But the same study found that cleaning just one part of your desk reduces anxiety and makes the job seem easier. Start near your keyboard (the area that distracts you most) or the paper pile that’s been sitting around the longest.

Does it stack up?

Privacy is one thing, but if you’ve been hiding beneath stacks of papers that couldrival the Sears Tower, it’s time to find your way out. Every day for a week, go through one pile on yourdesk. Do it when you’re feeling most decisive— it’s judgment time. Smallin suggests: ―Make a decisionabout each paper: Throw it out? Shred it? File it? Deliver it?‖ Once your area is clean, get into the habit of making a decision every time a piece of paper lands on your desk.

Make a clean exit Carve out the last 5 minutes of every workday to clear off your desk, Smallin says. File away any papers you didn’t get a chance to go through earlier. If it’s something you need to tackle first thing in the a.m., leave it by your computer. The rest? Out of sight, out of mind. Then, take a moment to sweep a disinfecting wipe over your (uncluttered) desk. You wouldn’t believe how many germs reside there.

Let me know how you go!!

What A Wonderful World

What A Wonderful World

Posted on 22. Jun, 2010 by Julia Mitchell.

With so much going on in our lives we need to make time to Stop and be thankful for the world that we live in.

Be thankful for the people who love us.  Be thankful for the roof over our heads, regardless if we rent or own, if the roof has holes or not. I love this song and hope you enjoy it as well.

Being thankful for everything that we have in our life creates an atmosphere of thanksgiving and allows blessings to come into our lives.

Being thankful opens us up to receiving all kinds of wonderful blessings. When in a state of gratefullness, we acknowledge our true selves & radiate this energy to others.

Some things to be thankful for and there are many but this is just to get you started.

The air I breathe that keeps me alive

Clean water to drink

Good food to enjoy

My body and all the movements it swiftly performs

My sense of sight

All kinds of good quality chocolate!

The sound of the sea

All my plants and their positive message about life

The fresh breeze of the evening after a hot summer’s day

A musical instrument being well played

An old friend remembering my birthday

A warm shower

Clean and fresh teeth

Teaching the Elephant to Dance

Teaching the Elephant to Dance

Teaching the Elephant to Dance: Empowering Change

Book by James A. Belasco

The Elephant would have to be one of the most powerful land animals on earth and is capable of huge physical force and feats of strength.

Observe an Elephant in the wild and you will see it has the ability to push down massive trees, just to get the berries from a branch out of its reach.

Yet anyone who has been to a circus or a zoo will notice that Adult Elephants are tied down with a simple rope from their leg to a stake in the ground.

To the observer this makes no sense. How can a simple rope hold down one of the world’s most powerful and majestic animals?

The fact is, it does this very successfully because the rope keeps the Elephant’s enormous strength under total control at all times.

How is this so? Wouldn’t the rope simply break or the peg leave the ground the instant the elephant applied even the smallest amount of force?

The answer is yes, it would absolutely break with little effort.

However, this would only happen if the Elephant was able to break, not the rope, but its years of training and the way it was taught to think: It’s mental rope.  Are you getting where we are going?

You see, these Elephants have been trained since they were very small that they cannot break free. To start with, the trainers use very strong chains attached to stakes dug deep into the ground.  Over the years the young Elephant begins to realise pulling and trying to escape the chain and stake is impossible.

As the Elephant grows and gets used to the idea that the stake and chain is unbreakable, the trainer can attach just about any old flimsy rope to the Elephant’s foot and tie it to a stake of limited strength (compared to the Elephant’s abilities), and the Elephant will believe it is trapped.

Elephants aren’t the only ones who forget they can dance.  From a young age, many of us are conditioned to believe ideas that keep us chained to lives that are not what we dreamed.

What are the mental ropes that are keeping you tied down?

Like the Elephant, you are a powerful being.  Many of the things we believe are holding us back can be broken through with the smallest amount of effort, once we know how.  And we can be left wondering how we let it keep us trapped for so long.

Don’t you think it is time to dance?

So how to break though and set a new course?  Vision.  The way to change your future is to begin to visualize what is possible.

A clear picture of where you want to go is the key to mobilizing the support you need to get there.
Another important aspect of developing a vision is to anticipate and get ready to handle obstacles. They’re inevitable, and if your are not prepared, they will create anguish and undercut your ability to achieve your goals.  Common obstacles include:

• Elapsed time: Plans almost always take longer to realize than anticipated.

• Expectations: They tend to be exaggerated.

• Critics: These—often proponents of staying on the same old path around the pole—come with the territory.

• Procrastination: A reason can always be found to delay.

• Imperfection: We’ve all heard the phrase: “The perfect is the enemy of the good”: it’s important to recognize when ‘close enough’ is good enough.

It’s time to move your elephant forward and I look forward to helping you.

Can I make Money on the Internet?

Can I make Money on the Internet?

Posted on 18. Jun, 2010 by Julia Mitchell.

Do you believe you can generate an income on the Internet?

If you have answered yes then you are correct. Think how many millions of people use the internet today.  The internet is the way of the future and opens up a whole new world of opportunity for you even if you are a small home-based business owner.

Through the power of the internet your business can grow world wide.  I’m sure if you have done a search you have come across sites of countless new millionaires offering to share their secrets on how they have done this.

They started their business from scratch just like you and me.  Everyone has to begin somewhere.

The internet continues to grow as does the opportunities.  With over 1.7 billion online there is room for you and me.  What is astounding is that this figure only represents 25% of the world’s population which means there is still a lot of room to grow.  What percentage of the market would you like?

To begin you need to find a system to work with.  Then you need to commit, it takes time and money.  You need to treat your online business as a business and not just a hobby.  A hobby will cost you money but a business will make you money.

For the last couple of years I have tried several different online opportunities and have learnt so much. However it wasn’t until I recently came across that offered me a system, tools, training and income opportunity did everything begin to fall into place.

For about a year I got bogged down with information overload and spent more time looking for the next new idea rather then committing to the ideas I already had.

Most people fail because they never launch.  If you would like help in launching your online business then I would like to help you.  You also need to have determination and a friend to support you along the way.  Never give up.  I notice many sites online that offer great opportunities and when I read into it, nothing has been updated for 3 or 4 years.  I wonder where they would be now if they stuck with it.

Visit MLM Online Global sign up for my free information and consider joining to achieve maximum benefits.

If you are sincerely passionate about your success, you will succeed — it’s that simple.  The true secret to creating a successful Internet business is pure determination.  I look forward to helping you soon.

Dream it!

Dream it!

“What the mind of man can conceive, it can achieve.”

Napoleon Hill

What is your mind conceiving?  To conceive means to form or develop in your mind.

It talks about in the bible that the people without vision will perish.

This is serious stuff, with a vision a dream we perish we just run around and around in circles hoping that we will arrive somewhere.

Does this describe you?

Then be encouraged.

Today right now or in a minute, I want you to find a nice quiet spot, turn the phone off, computer off, children off and grab a pen and piece of paper.

Right now that it is silent I want you to close your eyes and begin to dream.  Think about how you want things to look. How do you see yourself, fit, healthy, standing tall and proud.  How do you see your finances, abundance overflowing so that you can give much away.  What does the house look like that you are living in.  What does the car look like that you are driving?  How do you picture yourself as you are walking down the street.  What makes you smile?

Everyone  is really looking and wanting for the same things.

  1. To Be Happy!
  2. To Be Healthy!
  3. To Be Reasonably Prosperous
  4. To Be Secure
  5. To Have Friends
  6. To Have Peace of Mind
  7. To Have Good Family Relationships
  8. To Have Hope

Many of these things are open to change and that could be instant and dramatic.  You can have it all one day and loose it the next.

Coming back to dreaming big, how big is your dream as it will be the dream that will see you pick yourself back up when the going is tough and winning the race that is set before you.

Keep dreaming, write the dream down, visit it daily, you might write it up and put it on your fridge so you can read it often.  Begin to live as if it is already happening, see yourself the person you want to be.  You will be surprised how amazing our minds out and how they work for good.
